Sorry Croatian Smurfs
Posted Jan 31, 2008 8:15 AM by Sung

If you're going to go after the record for the most Smurfs in one place, you can't half-ass it. You have to bring your A game. The record is 451 Smurfs set by students at Warwick University last year. The Croatians managed just 395 Smurfs. Pathetic.

This is real and they are taking it very seriously. We need this here in the US, although they'd dumb it down to wrestling and hungru-hungry hippos. Actually, that doesn't sound half bad.
YourStreet.com: Local News Website
Posted Oct 30, 2007 8:32 AM by Sung
I've had this idea before but didn't do anything about it. Yourstreet.com has a Google map that has different pins for news stories from your area. When you initially open the site, it detects your IP address but there is a search bar in the header. Apparently, it finds the location of the story through clues in the news article like addresses and road names. I thought it came out surprisingly accurate, which doesn't mean it's always dead on. Some locations, I don't know how it knew where it was. There was nothing in the article about where the story took place.
Once you click on an article, it takes you to a page just for that story where you have options like moving the location if it's wrong on the map, comment on the story or recommend it.

Geoff Evila: Coma Survivor, iPhone Owner
Posted Oct 22, 2007 8:43 AM by Sung
Geoff Evila went into a coma four months ago after a car accident. Before he went into the coma, he had a lot planned in his life. Now, Geoff is trying to get back his life one step at a time. His motor skills being one, another being getting an iPhone. He was very excited when the iPhone was announced and planned to wait in line when it was released. Unfortunately, the coma conflicted with his schedule. Geoff's friend was able to help recreate the excitement of purchasing the iPhone when he told a local Apple store's employees about Geoff's story.
111 Shirtless at Abercrombie and Fitch Store
Posted Oct 18, 2007 9:31 AM by Sung

Improv Everywhere decided to get 111 dudes to walk into an Abercrombie and Fitch store shirtless. Before they went into the store, they did all the gay things that's pictured on A&F ads. Then they went into the store and looked at clothes and took pictures. They've done this before. I remember seeing them before where they dressed up like employees at a Best Buy and moved slow motion at a Home Depot. Both were kind of amusing but this A&F stunt was funny because of the concept that all A&F customers are like the people pictured in their ads and stores. The Best Buy and Home Depot stunts are just weird.
Sport of Rock Balancing

In what must be an incredible show of patience and preciseness, there are people in this weird world we all share that make a practice of balancing seemingly implacable rocks on top of each other. The result is surreal and quiet beautiful... if for nothing more than its apparent impossibility.

Holyfield to Take on Holyfield

Evander Holyfield is set to release a $99 Grill that will directly compete with George Foreman's Lean Mean Grilling Machine. Holyfield's grill will be called Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Grill. I can't wait for Mike Tyson's Crazy Ear-Biting Grill. Don't let the name fool you, it's not actually crazy. Inanimate objects don't have mental capacities to be crazy.

Multi-Million Dollar Underground Pot Farm
Posted May 7, 2007 11:01 AM by Sung
So this couple built this very sophisticated pot farm underneath a house. It has hidden hydraulic door in the garage, an irrigation system, surveillance cameras everywhere and an escape route that goes out a door hidden under a fake rock. If I decided to build a pot farm, this is close to how I would do it (mine would include robots in medieval armor that poses as decoration until set off by motion sensors and attack the intruder). The story has lot of pictures of the pot farm and some guesses as to how they were caught.

SuTree - Video Help
Posted May 4, 2007 9:46 AM by Sung
Sutree is a video website where you can watch and upload videos. The videos get rated and commented on like any other streaming video website. This website stands out from the rest that the videos are only tutorials. People can upload a video about something that they know how to do. Thiswould be great for the MAKE and ReadyMade audience. This seems like a really good idea. Of course, you can only make so many youtube clones until you put a clock in it (i.e. Revver, Metacafe) or make a niche version (i.e. Pornotube), so it's not an original idea. But I like where Sutree is going with their site. Though eventually, someone will post a tutorial about sex positions, they'll have to add an over 18 disclaimer and it will eventually become Pornotube. It always happens. Pornotube.

i used to believe that all the people on t.v. lived in the plug. when the t.v. was off, they all congragated in the plug, and when we turned the t.v. on, all the little people would run through the inside of the cord, into the t.v. and act out any show we wanted to watch. i would feel sorry for them when my daddy would change the channel so much as they would have to change their clothes so often!

Streamload MediaMax - Store, Organize, Access, Share Your Files - Videos, Photos, Music, Movies And More

Streamload is online storage. Techcrunch had an article of 13 online storage sites. They picked Omnidrive as the king but Streamload and Box.net got honorable mentions. Omnidrive has every feature conceivable but Streamload offers 25GB of storage free! I signed up and I was able to use it right away. You can pay $29.95 a month and get a Terabyte of storage.Labels: internet, internet web apps, storage
NewsVine Invites
Posted Jan 30, 2006 11:49 PM by Sung
NewsVine is another Web 2.0 website. They give you news and the ability to blog the news in a different way then other websites. It's started by Mike Davidson with some other people that he worked with at ESPN and Disney. I've been following Mike's blog ever since I found a good article about CSS, I forgot what it was, I guess it wasn't that great. But I does very good work like the ESPN website layout. The previous one, not the current one. He blogged about how he quit his job at ESPN/Disney and was going to work on some big project. I hope he does well with NewsVine, after leaving the comfy job at a big, successful corporation.Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur have been talking about it on their podcasts. I don't know why I listen to all of them podcasts. They talk about the same things on all of them. I just wish There's more SuicideGirls radio shows. Last one was very good, BTW. Anyway, I just got accepted to NewsVine, which is in Beta. If anyone wants one and don't want to wait to get accepted, post in the comments with your email or if you don't feel secure about that, email me at sungchoi [at] gmail.com.
iPod Directions
Posted Oct 18, 2005 12:40 PM by Sung
This is a late post. I found about this awhile ago and thought it was blog-worthy but forgot to add it.You basically enter a starting address and a destination, click the second button, and the website will give you a zip file of images files. The image files are alternately a map image and text direction. If you have an iPod Photo, Ipod nano or the new iPod, you upload the image files and you can scroll through the image as directions. It's really easy to use and it's free!
Google's Plan for World Domination
Posted Aug 15, 2005 9:13 PM by Sung
Below is a link to an interesting article about how Google can take over the world. They talk about how Google has been quietly buying all these unused fiber-optic cables across the country from wholesalers like AboveNet. This way Google can set up their own telecom company. They would bypass going from their servers to wholesaler to ISP's like Comcast, Verizon, etc. Going through these would cost Google $60 per megabit and of course they have a lot of traffic. This would go up when the new bandwidth-heavy services that they have planned. So basically Google wants to be their own ISP and not have to pay traffic fees. Saving that money would justify buying all those miles and miles of cables. They would get their connection out there by covering major cities with free Wi-Fi connection. They've shown that they definitely have an interest in Wi-Fi when they sponsored putting up free Wi-Fi access in San Francisco. The company that set up this Wi-Fi system is called Feeva. They have a proprietary technology that can track the exact location of the everyone using their Wi-Fi connection. This is something that MSN have promised with their version of Google Maps.
If Google can locate where you are, they can put advertisements for local businesses near YOU. It's one step below the technology seen in Minority Report when Tom Cruise walks into the mall and all the advertisements recognized who he was and advertised for his character (another Minority Report example).
