Sorry Croatian Smurfs

If you're going to go after the record for the most Smurfs in one place, you can't half-ass it. You have to bring your A game. The record is 451 Smurfs set by students at Warwick University last year. The Croatians managed just 395 Smurfs. Pathetic.

Kites for Greener Boats

Kites for Greener Boats

A new German ship called MV Beluga SkySails will set sail with a new concept for saving costs and saving the Earth. They are attaching very large kites to help move large boats. They say that it can cut fuel use up to 20% or $1,600 a day. Also, burning less fuel means less emissions into the atmosphere for a smaller carbon footprint. The Skysails will be the guinea pig and if it is successful other companies will be able to buy this technology.

Study Shows Philadelphia Sucks

Ugly Philadelphia

I love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia but I didn't think people in Philadelphia was really like that. A Travel & Leisure magazine and CNN Headline News survey found that Philadelphians are the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly. Beating out Washington DC and Dallas/Fort Worth for the honors.
Farley (senior editor at www.travelandleisure.com) pointed out the results...mean people in Philadelphia are ugly or the city is a bad place to visit.
Okay the "..." replaces "don't". But who cares Philadelphia sucks. Especially the way they played .500 ball at the end of the season, forcing the Mets to make the greatest collapse in sports history.

Monkey War Going on in India

Monkey War in India

The deputy mayor of Delhi, India was attacked by a group of wild monkeys yesterday and has died today. Apparently, wild monkeys are a real problem in India. The solution to this problem is, you guessed it, a group of larger monkeys trained to take out the wild monkeys. This is the beginning of another Monkey War.

Evander Holyfield is set to release a $99 Grill that will directly compete with George Foreman's Lean Mean Grilling Machine. Holyfield's grill will be called Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Grill. I can't wait for Mike Tyson's Crazy Ear-Biting Grill. Don't let the name fool you, it's not actually crazy. Inanimate objects don't have mental capacities to be crazy.

"Dead" man wakes up under autopsy knife

Posted Sep 18, 2007 8:46 AM by Sung
Dead man wakes up under autopsy knife This is like one of my many nightmare scenarios to be in. It's like waking up while you're in surgery. Fortunately, it's wasn't in the part of the autopsy where your stomach is sliced open and the autopsy doctor juggles your intestines. If it was at that point, I think he would've went back to sleep.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor -- and alive.

$100 Credit to the Apple Store

Posted Sep 7, 2007 8:53 AM by Sung
After the 8GB iPhone price was dropped from $599 to $399 just two months from the product launch, the return rate on the iPhone started to increase dramatically. Even Nokia went ahead and stuck it to early iPhone adopters and Apple with the Google Adwords ad below.

Nokia sticks it to Apple

Immediately, Apple annouced that if you bought an iPhone within the last 14 days you can receive the $200 difference. Well, you are allowed to return it and buy a new one for the new price. There might be a restocking fee. Some say they were able to get away with it even though it had been a month since they bought it.

Yesterday, Steve Jobs announced that you would receive a $100 credit for the Apple store for anyone with an iPhone. It's an unprecedented move in the personal electronics market, especially from Apple. Personally, I think that the $200 should be an early adopter's tax. I know this is a good thing for consumers but I've paid a lot of early adopter's tax in the past and I'm bitter about it. Grrr.

The Upcoming Google Phone/GPhone

Posted Aug 30, 2007 8:08 AM by Sung
GPhone ConceptsHere is a post about the upcoming GPhone or Google Phone. There has been many "leaks" from Google employees that there will definitely be a Google Phone before the year is over, maybe as soon as next month. If it does come out, I think it'll have a bigger impact on the mobile market than the iPhone. I've written about it before about all the features it will have.

It will supposedly run linux, which means open source, which means apps can be written for it in the future if it doesn't come with the phone in the first place. The iPhone does not have this feature. There are only web apps for it. I don't understand why they made a big deal about running OS X but not allow third-party applications.

I'm thinking something like a music player. Maybe the Google music player isn't that great, someone might write an app that emulates iTunes and its coverflow. Of course it'll be taken down by Apple for copyright infringement, but early adopters would still have it.

The post that I linked talks a lot about the built-in camera. He would like to see image stabilization support. Not many camera phones have image stabilization built-in and blurriness is a major problem with pictures taken with phones. I personally don't think a camera is an issue. I would go without it if it'll make the phone smaller, lighter and cheaper. Standalone cameras are becoming so small that it's not cumbersome carrying a phone and a camera around. I would much rather have one device dedicated to doing one thing really well than one device that does them mediocral.

From the early rumors I've heard, the price was around $250 USD. If that's the case, I think it prices itself like the Wii against the PS3, which in this case is the iPhone. I'm really pulling for the Google Phone on this one to prove to everyone that the iPhone is an overpriced, overhyped fossil tied down by its deal with one of the worst telecoms on Earth.

Awesome Image Resizer

Posted Aug 29, 2007 8:02 AM by Sung

Yesterday, this video was released. The video is for a image resizing technology that doesn't just scale the image, it manipulates the image so that certain areas gets multiplied and certain areas stay the same. The areas that stays the same can be chosen automatically or manually. It can also be used to delete certain things out of images. This is done with a simple click and drag.

Well, the co-creator, Shai Avidan, will now be working for Adobe in their Newton, MA office. It'll be great if he is put on the Dreamweaver team instead of Photoshop and he's all like, "okay, cool" because he's probably a good programmer. Adobe would be pretty stupid if they did that though.

The Enquirer said Wilson's wrist was stitched and bandaged at the hospital, and that Wilson would "be detoxed."
They're talking about Owen Wilson. I guess I won't make fun of him anymore.

2 Girls Kill Friend Cuz They Felt Like It

This is a very interesting article about two 17-year-old Australian girls that one day decided to kill their friend. They just snuck up behind her and started to choke her with a speaker wire while holding a cloth soaked with chemicals. It sounded like she didn't go down easily, even though the girls said that they were trying to kill Eliza, the victim, without having her suffer. Then they buried her. They pretended to help Eliza's families look for her but eventually turned themselves in. Here are some of the girls' quotes:

"We just did it because we felt like it, it is hard to explain."

"I knew we had wanted to kill someone before."

"We knew it was wrong, but it didn't feel wrong at all, it just felt right."

Google Phone To Release in Late 2007

Posted Apr 19, 2007 8:48 AM by Sung
Google Phone The much anticipated (by me) Google Phone is set to be released by the end of the year. HTC will be manufacturing it. They've made their mark making Windows CE Pocket PCs.

There have been rumors about the phone for a few months now. So far, Gmail and Google Maps have been confirmed and it won't have GPS built-in. It will support 3G and EDGE, no word on HSPDA. Only a non-US carrier Orange signed up to carry it. It was rumored to be unlocked so you could probably use it with T-Mobile and Verizon. No word on pricing but it was rumored to cost less than half what the iPhone will cost since it doesn't say Apple on it.

Take a Taxi from NY to AZ

Take a NY cab to Arizona A New York couple decided to move to Arizona once they retired. Like most New Yorkians, they didn't have a car. Rather than flying and shipping their pets where they can't see them, they decided to take a cab. They asked a taxi-driver, "wanna drive us to Arizona?" The taxi-driver said, "would I?!" all excited like Milhouse from the Simpsons would be. Then they did and gave Milhouse money. The end.

Goshen Rocks

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Matt White bought a piece of property that belonged to his great-aunt for $50,000 so that she can go to a nursing home. Then while working on the property, he kept digging these weird flat rocks. They were Goshen stone. They cost about $100 per ton, which is a lot if you think about it. They're just rocks. It turns out that he might have 24 million tons of it. Despite the prospect of becoming a billionaire, it seems like Matt White is still trying to play in the Majors.

Survivor Duck

Posted Jan 22, 2007 2:20 PM by Sung
Survivor Duck This story is about a duck that was shot down and injured its wing. The hunter brought it home and put it in a fridge. Two days later, the hunter's wife opened the fridge and saw the duck's head move. They took it to a local veterinary hospital and then taken to an animal sanctuary for more specialised treatment. They gave the duck a 75% chance of survival and will probably never be recovered enough to release it back into the wild.

Blind woman sees after heart attack

Posted Jan 20, 2006 2:08 PM by Sung

This is a ridiculous story where Joyce Urch, a blind woman since 1979, woke up in the hospital after suffering a heart attack and could see again. Then she looked at her husband and mirror and said we're old. She was able to see her grandchild for the first time.

The doctors say that she has glucoma but that wasn't the reason for her blindness in the first place. They are still looking into how it happened.

100 Packets of Cocaine This lady from Trinidad was arrested a couple of years ago for having 100 packets of cocaine in her stomach as she was smuggling them.

She was told not to eat on the flight although she did anyway, little knowing that eating stimulates gastric juices which can burn through the latex and cause the bags to burst. Fortunately, this did not happen.

Google's Plan for World Domination

Posted Aug 15, 2005 9:13 PM by Sung
Google World DominationBelow is a link to an interesting article about how Google can take over the world. They talk about how Google has been quietly buying all these unused fiber-optic cables across the country from wholesalers like AboveNet. This way Google can set up their own telecom company. They would bypass going from their servers to wholesaler to ISP's like Comcast, Verizon, etc. Going through these would cost Google $60 per megabit and of course they have a lot of traffic. This would go up when the new bandwidth-heavy services that they have planned. So basically Google wants to be their own ISP and not have to pay traffic fees. Saving that money would justify buying all those miles and miles of cables.

They would get their connection out there by covering major cities with free Wi-Fi connection. They've shown that they definitely have an interest in Wi-Fi when they sponsored putting up free Wi-Fi access in San Francisco. The company that set up this Wi-Fi system is called Feeva. They have a proprietary technology that can track the exact location of the everyone using their Wi-Fi connection. This is something that MSN have promised with their version of Google Maps.

If Google can locate where you are, they can put advertisements for local businesses near YOU. It's one step below the technology seen in Minority Report when Tom Cruise walks into the mall and all the advertisements recognized who he was and advertised for his character (another Minority Report example).
